Learning Humility and Hugh B. Brown’s talk “God is the Gardener”

January 2, 2017
Hello again everyone!
I hope Christmas was wonderful and that you’re all doing well! It’s a little different without snow, but it’s still wonderful all the same.
This year has been wonderful and I’m blessed to know all of you in my life, and I am so grateful to God for His great blessings throughout my life. I also wish you all a Happy New Year!
Well, a lot has happened so far on the mission. Talking to people is always a blast! While it’s harder, I feel the hand of the Lord guiding me throughout my days and the Spirit guiding me where to go as I pray. So many amazing experiences, but rough patches come along.
I have learned a lot on my mission, and am still learning and understanding more of missionary life, and life in general. And like in life, we hit many bumps in the road that make it hard to go around on our own. But these things happen. However, as I remember these trials, a little story keeps popping into my mind. It’s about the little current bush that an Apostle had shared.
Sometimes when we feel life is going all well, something happens and we lose our way, or a big hurdle crosses the way. Sometimes we wonder, why did this happen and how could God, our Heavenly Father do this to us. But he continues to say how God knows what he wants us to be. And these trials we experience is for our benefit.
In Ether 12:27, it says:
And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.

God gave man their weakness because he loves us. And it’s because he loves us, that he knows the type of person he wants us to be. And as we have faith in Christ, our Savior, through Him, can we become strong, and be the person that our Heavenly Father wants us to be. Trust in the Lord Christ, that through faith and hope in Him, all is possible.
Brothers and Sisters. I love you so much. I promise you that God is there, and is desiring to hear your prayers. I promise that the Lord’s hand is always stretched out to us, and He will never turn it away. Through Him, we become strong. He is the Captain of our Salvation, and knows who He wants us to be, and that these trials are but for a strong moment, so that in the end, we may rest in the Kingdom of our Father, and in the Kingdom, of our King and Savior, Jesus Christ. I bear witness that these things are true, and that they love us so much. They only want what is best for us. Their love is great and divine for each and every one of you. As we go through this new year, I promise you that all will be done well and said as we continue to remain steadfast in Christ, and in the words of an apostle, we will say:
“Thank you Heavenly Father, for loving me enough to cut me down.”
And I say these things in the sacred name of our Redeemer, Jesus the Christ, Amen.
Have a wonderful New Year, and may God bless you and be with you till we meet again.

  1. Your dad spoke today at Plainview during testimony meeting. He told us that you are doing well and have learned the language. I knew you would do well. Brother Caldwell is leaving today and some high priests wore a fake bald heads as a joke. Love u Elder Rivas
